Hereit is Live!

After more than three years of setbacks, challenges, small victories and aggravations, Hereit went live last night—June 24, 2013 at 10 p.m. CST.

There were three bands on the site at launch time—Clara Venus, Bick and Grand Mal—all old friends from New York. Grand Mal’s “Count Me In!” was the top song on the site, which seemed particularly fitting. I was going to spend another couple weeks pleading and cajoling friends to put songs up, but I am not that good at asking for favors, which I have had to do a lot of lately, and I am awful at asking twice. Plus, the site works, and after such a long development process, I just wanted it out there.

I did publicly grovel for support on Facebook though:

Okay, friends, after three and a half years of stops and starts and stumbles and frustrations, the website I have been developing went live last night. Hereit (www.hereit.org) is a site for original local music, organized by locations and genres, that allows artists to sell songs and keep 100 percent of the sales. The site is free for listeners, with no advertising or data capture. A friend called it my “anti-website.” The goal is to help create and support self-reliant and sustainable music communities by respecting listeners and giving artists maximum control of their work.  For everyone I have ever served a drink on the house, written free bios or reviews for, fixed guitars for, hooked up with freelance work or hired for longterm employment–now is your chance to return the favor. Please go to the site, read the About sections and share the link as much as you can. Artist friends around the country, please drop $3 to set up an account. Right now, the site is launched with just a few friends from New York posting songs, who made it possible to go live. The more bands that are on the site, the greater the momentum behind it, and the easier it will be for me to tell its story. Thank you!

That goes for you too, reader, whoever you are out there. Check out Hereit. Sign up for an account. Get your town on the site. If it isn’t one of the choices, just let me know.

And let me know what you think. The site is for you just as much as it is for anybody.
